Backstory
Hakurei Shrine in a snowy winter.
The shrine had once collapsed due to an earthquake, but it has now fully regained its original form.
One day, an event occurred that startled Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine.
It was a white column—a geyser—that suddenly rose near Hakurei Shrine.
Normally, whenever something happened, she would set out to resolve it, but this event
both startled and delighted her.
The geyser would melt the snow, and hot springs—capable of healing the physical fatigue of both humans and youkai alike—were bound to well up all around it.
Marisa: “…Isn’t it dangerous to get close to a geyser?”
Reimu: “It’s a chance to attract visitors to the shrine, so it’s fine if it’s a little dangerous for them.
If hot springs start bubbling up, the villagers will surely come to pay their respects.”
Marisa: “Though they’ll probably just be coming for the hot springs.”
However, Reimu’s optimistic expectations were dashed.
What was gushing from the geyser wasn’t just hot spring water.
One after another, strange beings began to emerge—earth spirits, beings that dwell beneath the earth.
Panicked, the girls debated what to do about the geyser and ultimately decided to harvest the hot spring water.
In fact, the earth spirits were docile. Though called earth spirits, they were primarily transformed earthbound spirits.
In Gensokyo, where youkai and ghosts run rampant, they reasoned that the emergence of earth spirits at this late stage wouldn’t have much of an impact.
However, the shrine maiden’s decision drew the ire of the youkai.
There was a secret behind the earth spirits’ appearance that Reimu and the others knew nothing about.
――Scarlet Devil Mansion
Patchouli Knowledge, the witch who resides in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, sensed danger in the fact that
the youkai and earth spirits from the underground were emerging to the surface.
Through her books, she knew that a power beyond the control of surface-dwelling youkai lay dormant there.
She also knew that youkai should not easily venture into the underground city.
However, she had almost no one around her to consult.
Growing impatient with Reimu and the others’ lack of action, she reluctantly decided to seek advice from
the youkai said to be one of the oldest in Gensokyo.
The ancient youkai—Yukari Yakumo—wished to refrain from youkai interfering with the Underworld.
Yukari: “Since the Underworld has its own , we mustn’t make too much of a fuss.”
Pache: “The humans aren’t doing anything, and if we keep this up, we’ll be playing catch-up—is that really okay?”
Yukari: “Well… I suppose there’s no helping it. It would be a hassle if you lot went and acted on your own .”
Pache: “What do you mean by ‘again’…? Let’s set that aside for now. For the time being, could you take the lead?
You seem to know about the Underworld.”
Yukari: “No, we won’t be going. Only humans will venture into the Underworld.
This might be a trap to lure us out…”
Having said that, Murasaki promised only to see Reimu and the others off, and arranged for the youkai to provide support from the surface.
――The sealed youkai awoke alongside a violent geyser.
The memories of the earth were materializing one after another, and soon Gensokyo would be thrown back into an era of ancient history.
The youkai beneath the earth had been banished there because they possessed abilities that were reviled.
Their emergence was not something either humans or youkai wished to see.
Snow glistening softly.
A palace surrounded by beautiful colors.
She was there.

● Communication Strength
The antenna-like gauge in the lower-left corner indicates your communication strength with the Youkai remaining on the ground.
It instantly reaches maximum when you move to a part of the screen close to the ground; otherwise, it gradually decreases.
Also, it increases (for some reason) even if you just graze enemy bullets.
The score for score items is determined by the Communication Strength percentage.
